Gilmário Vemba: “The idea is also to draw the Portuguese public's attention to the humor made in Angola”

'Tunezas' apart, Gilmário Vemba is the “golden boy” of Angolan humor. Collecting stamps in the second passport, stopping is not in the equation. ‘Hypothetically (Good)’ goes in the bag to Portugal and then stops in London. But it doesn't stop there. A good son always returns home, so Angola could not fail to be part of the list of countries that will attend the new show by the comedian. And it's ‘Mr. Filadagoda that leaves the warning: “Do not wait for someone to tell you”.

:

Leaving aside the hypothetical ... why is this a good show to watch?

Because it is a hypothetically good show, certainly not a good one, thus exposing the sincerity of creating jokes, as they tend to be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, they can be completely funny and on the other hand completely stupid, so, I tell you, don't expect someone to tell you.

Do you notice many differences between Angolan and Portuguese audiences? Who laughs the most?

Of course, apart from the color (laughs), they have different tastes when it comes to laughing. It is clear that the Angolan public, as a matter of habit and climate, is much more keen on smiling.

Luanda, Lisbon, London ... the passport - solo - starts to get well stamped. Expectations for the UK capital?

I'm already on my second passport, I just hope I don't get a red stamp. The expectation is great, but it will still be in Portuguese, which makes me more relaxed, I still don't know how to think well in English.

Can this show in England be an 'experience' for an increasingly international Gilmário?

Perhaps on the way, I will find many warning signs in English. When I start doing it for the English public, yes, I can talk about a bigger market expansion. But it always ends up being a gateway.

Are there any plans for the end of the tour? What is the watchword for 2020?

The tour only starts in February, in fact we still don't have a date for the end of it. We have Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Cape Verde to do during 2020.

And the (long-awaited) return to television?

It's coming very soon. There is still a lot to do on television.

Are there more 'Gilmários' out there in Angola that the world has to know?

There are many ‘Gilmário’, and I can say with certainty that there are even better ‘Gilmarios’ in Angola. The idea is also to draw the Portuguese public's attention to these ‘Gilmarios’ and to the humor made in Angola.
