Collective exhibition takes works by 11 Angolan artists to Kenyan gallery

The collective exhibition “Atlântico: Angola e São Tomé & Príncipe Contemporâneo” takes works by 11 Angolan artists and one São Tomé to the art gallery ‘Circle Art’, located in Nairobi, Kenya. The exhibition opens this Wednesday, January 22nd.

Ricardo Kapuka:

The first exhibition of the Kenyan gallery for the year 2020 thus has more than two hands full of Angolan artists, in a combination of established masters and emerging artists who live in Angola and in the diaspora. The term “Atlântico” is purposely chosen to describe an exhibition of artists whose inspiration (even if they live in the diaspora) is the territories of Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe.

“Atlantico: Angola e São Tomé & Príncipe Contemporâneo” presents a cross section in the practices developed in contemporary art from this geographical region of Atlantic Africa. A statement sent to VerAngola states that "all works include fiction and non-fiction, incorporating personal, political, economic, cultural and mythological themes".

It aims to encourage new questions and debates, taking into account “the many strands of Africa's Atlantic coast - which through slavery established a bridge between Angola, as part of the Congo and São Tomé and Príncipe, on the one hand, and Brazil and the USA, for another. The exhibition also aims to help to compare and contrast the realities of the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.

For Dominick A Maia Tanner, curator of the exhibition, this invitation from the Kenyan gallery “is a good example of the immense need and potential to unite divisions within the continent and create a dialogue between artists, audiences, academics and critics from East and West Africa and , simultaneously, intensify the 'South-South' narrative”.

The exhibition will remain in the gallery until 21 February. ‘Circle Art’ was founded in 2012 and is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, promoting contemporary art from East Africa.
