UNITA says administrative division “is expedient” to counter “irreversible fall” of the regime

The president of UNITA said that the new political-administrative division of the country is an “expedient” that aims to counter the “irreversible tendency of the fall” of the ruling party (MPLA) in the face of its “marked unpopularity”.

Adalberto Costa Júnior, who spoke at the opening of the fourth ordinary meeting of the Political Commission of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), accused the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) of "having thrown all the legislation into the dustbin municipal".

According to the president of UNITA, the party in power in Angola decided to deny all the speeches and promises made during its electoral campaign and "confess that it never had local elections on its agenda".

"We maintain our conviction that whoever was unable to solve the basic problems of the populations in the 164 municipalities in 49 years will certainly not be able to solve the problems in the now 326 municipalities. It is a question of political and material realism", he said.

From January 2025 onwards, Angola will have three new provinces, namely Icolo and Bengo (which arises from the division of the province of Luanda), Moxico Leste (which emerges from the division of the province of Moxico) and Cuando (which arises from the division of Cuando Cubango), totaling 21 provinces, in light of the new law on the country's administrative division.

For Adalberto Costa Júnior, the new political-administrative division of the country and the "treasures" to the geography of the provinces, "are nothing more than the expedient that aims to counter the irreversible trend of the fall of the party in power in the face of its marked unpopularity".

"Unpopularity is growing due to the inability to govern in transparency. The inability to improve the social and economic reality of workers, families and companies in our country," he said.

Speaking at the opening of this meeting that assesses the general situation of the country and the internal life of his party, the politician also deplored the continuous loss of the value of the kwanza and the "irreversible" despair of families in the face of the galloping inflation of basic food products.

He considered that the justification presented to the country regarding the new administrative division, as bringing services closer to the populations, "is a fallacy that hides the regime's true intentions".

"There will be no social and economic development, no progress as long as the regime continues to focus on its political survival and ignore the real problems of the people, like what we have seen over the last few years," he noted.

Costa Júnior said, on the other hand, that hunger in Angola "is today an undeniable reality" that affects many families, many of which "are increasingly turning to garbage containers to get something to eat".

Citing the country's poverty rates, unemployment, inflation, malnutrition and deficiencies in access to health and education, the party leader classified the country's social situation as "quite gloomy".

"And its shadows are projected, above all, for the future of the country, and there is, therefore, an urgent need to reverse the disastrous economic and social situation to mitigate the perverse future effects resulting from this serious situation", he indicated.

Angola's 50 years of independence, which will be celebrated on November 11, 2025, "have been lived under the sign of division, exclusion, extreme poverty of the people and under the sign of institutionalized corruption", he said.

Adalberto Costa Júnior also said that in 2025, the year in which it holds its XIV Ordinary Congress, UNITA must continue to carry out a "fierce defense" of the democratic State with guarantees of inherent rights and freedoms, pluralism of ideas and opinion.

"We will continue to press for the effectiveness of local authorities and for the fairness and transparency of processes", concluded the party leader.
