Mara Quiosa, governor of the province of Cuanza Sul and elected with 585 votes out of 693, was congratulated by the leader of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), João Lourenço, highlighting her positive work.
According to João Lourenço, the MPLA recognizes the merit of those "who tirelessly" leave the party and the country well.
"Those who work do not need to be the ones to say that I am a good cadre, I am a good politician, I deserve position A or B. Merit must be recognized by others, it must be recognized by the party and the party has eyes to see who are the cadres and leaders who tirelessly always make our party and our country okay", he stressed.
The new vice-president of the MPLA was elected with 585, corresponding to 95.7 percent of the votes, 17 against, nine abstentions, six null and 15 blank.
Speaking to the press, Mara Quiosa promised to work "more aggressively" so as not to defraud the trust placed in her by the leader.
"Indeed we have some experience, but nothing compared to what we must accomplish now, but we will continue working, helping comrade president on this journey, continuing to express our unconditional support for our leader", she said.
Mara Quiosa also cited the challenge of continuing to work to keep the party cohesive, paying full attention to all base structures.
"Our party remains organized, remains cohesive, we have all our organizations in full operation, what we will continue to do now is carry out this monitoring, which in some way has already been happening", she stated.
The meeting of the MPLA Central Committee, held after the party's VIII extraordinary congress that ended this Tuesday, elected the new Political Bureau, the majority of members reappointed, and the coordinator of the Discipline, Ethics and Audit Commission, Pedro Neto and as her deputy, Mariana Felipe.
Soon after, the MPLA Political Bureau elected the secretariat unanimously, with some adjustments, including the return of Mário António, as secretary for the Department of Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland, Nádia Monteiro, secretary for Administration and Finance, Roberto de Almeida, president of Fundação Sagrada Esperança, permanent guest.
In his final speech, João Lourenço said that this congress "which went against the pessimistic feelings of some people" took place in an environment "of harmony and camaraderie", stressing that "the objectives were achieved".
The MPLA's VIII extraordinary congress served to reflect on Angola's 50 years of independence, which marks the 11th of November 2025, and adjustment to the party's statutes, with emphasis on article 120, on the Designation of the Candidate for President and Vice President of the Republic.
With this adjustment, the candidate for president and vice-president of the Republic will now be designated by the Central Committee, proposed by the MPLA Political Bureau.
