UCCLA proposes Manuel Rui's name for new cultural center in Huambo

The Union of Portuguese-Speaking Capital Cities (UCCLA) proposed to President João Lourenço that the name Manuel Rui be given to the new Cultural Center in the city of Huambo, the organization announced in a statement.

:

The cultural facility will be inaugurated soon and the proposal to give it the name aims to recognize and thank “a whole life linked to national culture”, reads the note sent to the Lusa agency.

In the proposal, on the initiative of Angolan lawyer Fernando Oliveira, and signed by other personalities, including the general secretary of UCCLA, Vitor Ramalho, the role of the poet, writer, politician, university professor and lawyer Manuel Rui Monteiro stands out.

Author of the Angolan national anthem, Manuel Rui also wrote the poem “Os Meninos do Huambo”, set to music by Rui Mingas.

“Manuel Rui has a vast cultural work and has held various positions throughout his life (now 82 years old), which is reason enough for more than 60 personalities, from the district of Huambo, to have expressed and consensualized this consecration to the new Cultural Center in city of Huambo, or as an alternative to the Library or Auditorium of the new space”, highlights the proposal.

The proposal ends by highlighting that Manuel Rui “taught and will continue to teach thousands of Angolan children “how much a flag cost” and “how much freedom cost”, verses from “Os Meninos do Huambo”, popularized by Paulo de Carvalho.
