According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), in a bulletin released this Tuesday morning, the African continent registers 2,677,672 infected and the number recovered in the previous 24 hours was 11,745, for a total of 2,239,023.
Southern Africa is the most affected of the five African regions, with 1,134,497 cases and 29,011 deaths. In this region, South Africa, the country most affected by covid-19 in the continent, counts this Tuesday a total of 1,011,871 infections and 27,071 deaths.
North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 911,486 cases of infection and 23,766 deaths.
East Africa registers 319,156 infections and 5917 deaths, West Africa 239,216 infections and 3187 deaths, while Central Africa registers 73,317 cases and 1463 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, has 7466 deaths and 133,900 infected, followed by Morocco, with 7272 deaths and 433,029 infected.
In Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registered 403 deaths and 17,296 cases, followed by Mozambique (162 deaths and 18,310 cases), Cape Verde (112 deaths and 11,723 cases), Equatorial Guinea (86 deaths and 5248 cases), Guinea-Bissau (45 deaths and 2446 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1014 cases), according to the latest available data.
The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.
The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,765,049 deaths from more than 80.6 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a review by the French agency AFP.
The disease is transmitted by coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
