Covid-19: Africa with 365 more deaths and 21,598 infected in 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 365 deaths due to covid-19 and added 21,598 new cases in the last 24 hours, reaching a total of 57,422 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, according to official data.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), the African continent now registers a total of 2,429,662 people infected since the beginning of the pandemic in the 55 member states of the African Union.

The number of recovered in the last 24 hours was 19,956, for a total of 2,057,104.

Southern Africa is the region most affected, with 993,073 cases of infection and 25,603 deaths recorded. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by covid-19 on the continent, accounts for a total of 883,687 confirmed infections and 23,837 cases of deaths due to the disease.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 842,413 cases of infection and 21,938 fatalities.

East Africa registers 302,355 cases of infection and 5639 deaths, in West Africa, the number of infections is 222,153, having exceeded 3,000 deaths (3002), while Central Africa registers 69,668 cases and 1240 deaths, the same registered in the Saturday.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 6990 deaths and 123,153 infected, followed by Morocco, which counts 6749 fatalities and 406,970 infected.

Among the six most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 3997 deaths and 114,547 infected, Algeria, with 2631 deaths and 93,507 cases, Ethiopia, with 1818 fatalities and 118,006 cases, and Kenya, with 1614 deaths and 92,853 infected.

Regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registers 379 deaths and 16,407 cases, followed by Mozambique (145 deaths and 17,143 cases), Cape Verde (110 deaths and 11,458 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5195 cases), Guinea -Bissau (44 dead and 2446 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 killed and 1009 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on 14 February, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to report cases of infection on 28 February.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,636,687 deaths resulting from more than 73.4 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.
