Covid-19: Africa with 463 more deaths and 13,098 more infected in 24 hours

Africa has registered 463 deaths due to covid-19 and a further 13,098 new cases of infection in the last 24 hours, now accounting for 54,564 deaths caused by the new coronavirus, according to official data.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the African continent now has 2,284,907 cases of infected people in the 55 members of the African Union.

The number of recovered in the last 24 hours was 23,489, for a total of 1,961,471.

The highest number of cases of infection and deaths is recorded in Southern Africa, with 922,938 cases and 24,192 deaths. In this region, South Africa, the most affected country on the continent, accounts for 821,889 cases of infection and 22,432 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 796,300 infected people and 20,827 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 285,971 cases and 5407 deaths, West Africa has 212,601 infections with 2929 deaths, while Central Africa has 67,097 cases and 1209 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, has 6813 deaths and 119,281 infections, followed by Morocco, which has 6370 deaths but more than triple the number of infections: 384,088.

Among the six countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 105,445 infected and 3668 dead, Algeria, with 89,596 infections and 2522 dead, Ethiopia, with 114,266 cases and 1766 deaths, and Nigeria, with 70,195 infected and 1182 deaths.

In Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registered 355 deaths and 15,729 cases, followed by Mozambique (136 deaths and 16,373 cases), Cape Verde (109 deaths and 11,098 cases), Equatorial Guinea (85 deaths and 5166 cases), Guinea-Bissau (44 deaths and 2444 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1005 cases).

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,545,320 deaths as a result of more than 67 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a balance sheet made by the French agency AFP.

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.
