The shipment of this batch, the 12th, brings to 6,599,199 the total number of vaccines sent from the United States to Angola since August, making the North American country "Angola's largest single donor of vaccines against the covid-19 disease" , according to a statement.

The vaccines were shipped under the Covax initiative, in partnership with the African Union and Gavi, the global alliance for vaccines.

Covax is a global initiative to purchase vaccines for distribution to the poorest countries, driven by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other organizations to ensure global and equitable access to the immunizer.

The statement highlights that the US has so far provided more than 97 million doses to 43 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

"In financial terms, we've disbursed more than $1.9 billion in covid-19-related assistance for urgent needs such as emergency food and other humanitarian aid," the note reads.

The embassy stresses that "each dose is a promise kept and is part of the US global commitment to provide 1.1 billion doses" and stresses that the country is proud to "lead efforts to end" covid-19 disease, "who knows no borders".

Covid-19 has caused at least 5,320,431 deaths worldwide since the start of the pandemic, according to the latest report by Agence France-Presse.
