Angola and Mozambique firmly in CAN2025, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bisau out of the race

The football teams of Angola and Mozambique confirmed their presence in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (CAN), unlike Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, who missed out on qualifying for the final stage of the tournament.

Angola, led by the Portuguese Pedro Gonçalves, was at a high level and made history by remaining unbeaten in the six rounds for the first time in a classification, with four wins and two draws, qualifying with Sudan, with Ghana disappointing by finishing last in the group.

Geny Catamo's Mozambique also secured qualification, obtained on Tuesday, in the last round, after victory in Guinea-Bissau (2-1), precisely with an assist from the Sporting player.

Mali topped the group, with the Guineans finishing in third place. Cape Verde also did not qualify, finishing fourth, in a group in which Egypt came first, Botswana second, and Mauritania third.

The qualifying phase for CAN2025, which will be held in Morocco, between December 21, 2025 and January 18, 2026, has 24 teams.

The host team finished first in group B, ahead of Gabon, while the winning team from the last edition, Ivory Coast, led by Ousmane Diomande (Sporting), will defend their title after finishing second, behind Zambia.

In group A, Comoros and Tunisia passed, and Nigeria, José Peseiro's former team and losing finalist in the last edition of the tournament, and Benin also qualified in group D, ahead of Libya.

Algeria and Equatorial Guinea secured their place in group E, as did Congo and Tanzania in group H, finishing ahead of Guinea.

Cameroon and Zimbabwe, in group J, South Africa and Uganda, in group K, as well as Senegal and Burkina Faso, in 'pool' L, finished in first and second place, respectively, also participating in the final phase of CAN 2025.
