Traffic accidents caused more than 30 thousand deaths in ten years

In the last ten years, Angola has recorded 31,521 deaths and 147,670 injuries, from a total of 133,996 road accidents, the second cause of death in the country, after malaria, according to official data released this Thursday.

According to data from the National Directorate of Roads and Traffic to which Lusa had access, from January to September this year, 2333 deaths and 11,843 injuries have already been recorded, as a result of a total of 9092 traffic accidents.

The data indicate that, in the period under analysis, 2014 and 2015 were the years with the most accidents, with 17,271 and 15,122 occurrences, respectively, with the following years showing a decreasing trend until 2020, on an average of 10 thousand accidents, a period in which it was limited circulation due to the covid-19 pandemic.

As of 2021, the number of traffic accidents has increased again, in an increasing trend, with 2023 recording 14,429 accidents, 3121 deaths and 17,902 injuries.

In the last ten years, 2014 was the year that recorded the most deaths (4505) and injuries (18,344), with the number of deaths in the following years fluctuating between two thousand and three thousand people.

On Tuesday, the National Police launched the 17th edition of the World Day in Remembrance of Road Victims, which will be marked by a set of activities until November 29, with the carrying out of a national road prevention campaign, with the motto “Reaching Peace on the Road”, the distribution and dissemination of useful advice, a solidarity march for victims of road accidents and the International Road Accident Forum.
