Angola is experiencing a deep economic crisis and economic diversification is “a mirage”

The UNITA leader warned that Angola is experiencing a deep economic crisis, marked by poverty, and that the diversification of the economy has become “a mirage”. Adalberto Costa Júnior portrayed the country's economic situation when he spoke at the opening of the Conference on Economic Challenges and the OGE [General State Budget], promoted by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), through its Shadow Government .

According to Adalberto Costa Júnior, oil remains dominant in the Angolan economy, "despite the Government's statistical engineering", a situation he considered strange, as, he said, Angola has everything it needs to get out of this crisis.

"We have everything to reverse this poverty and extreme poverty. We have everything to put a smile back on the faces of all Angolans, of whom there are many, fortunately! The solution is not in the country's wealth; the reason is not people's incapacity. The reason is in leading the country", he highlighted, highlighting that Angola is one of the richest countries in the world.

According to the leader of UNITA, the conference that the party held served "to help the country promote paths of stability and development".

"As I am not an expert in economic matters, it is up to me to say that it has been essentially the political leadership that has been most responsible for the country's slowdown! The current economic crisis is supported by political decisions. There is a loss of values, a loss of references and a lack of a clear path that provides solutions", he stressed.

For Adalberto Costa Júnior, having more than 50 percent of the OGE for 2024 directed to debt payment "could lead to a real disaster", especially if "the reforms that everyone demands continue to be denied".

"It will not be possible to achieve any goal without political and administrative reforms! Continue to manipulate numbers, continue to stifle genuine businesspeople; replace them with corrupt rulers, continue to deny local authorities; keep the judicial and legislative power tied up and how sounding board of the head of the regime! Only with a strong and clear brake on all these bad practices will we be able to achieve goals of serving everyone and developing the country", he considered.

The leader of the main opposition party also said that UNITA understands that economic growth and development cannot be achieved with miserable wages or by impoverishing the national business community, through unfair competition from the State itself, which exerts an excessive weight on the economy, causing its ineffectiveness and inefficiency.

Regarding the civil service salary increase, which the Government plans to increase next year by 5 percent, Adalberto Costa Júnior argued that "public service salaries should increase and not in a palliative way".
