BNA focused on the implementation of “Kwik”, a platform for mobile and instant transfers

The National Bank of Angola (BNA) is focused on implementing an interoperability platform for the mobile and instant transfer system, called “Kwik”, informed the deputy governor of the BNA, Rui Miguêns.

The information was advanced by the official when speaking at the XI Banca Forum on Digital Transformation of Financial Services: "We are focused on the implementation of Kwik, the interoperability platform of our Mobile and Instant Transfers System", which according to Angop is scheduled for January of next year.

In his speech, the deputy governor also mentioned that the platform will be "managed by EMIS" and "will allow the customers of the various payment service providers to make transactions with each other".

He also took the opportunity to recall that in addition to the Mobile and Instant Transfers System, they launched "in the past, the Innovation Laboratory of the Angola Payment System" (LISPA), which concerns "an initiative that includes an incubator for the development of fintechs and other start-ups not related to the financial system".

He also reported that since 2019, "the year in which LISPA was launched" were received "602 applications for the various programs, most of which came from university students".

"In addition to LISPA, in September 2022 we approved our regulatory Sandbox. With Sandbox, we intend to provide the ideal environment for fintech startups, insurtechs and other entities in the country, to test their financial products and services in the market, in an environment supervised by the BNA, during a certain period", he added.

He also said that another challenge is related to "the introduction of open banking solutions, which were officially started with the approval, last October, by the Executive Committee of the BNA, of the Open Banking initiative, whose next steps involve work on team, including the Central Bank, EMIS, PSPs and Commercial Banks".

Purchasing operations at TPA almost tripled in the last five years

Rui Miguêns also took the opportunity to mention that the number of purchase operations at automatic payment terminals (APT) has almost tripled in the last five years: "The number of purchase operations at automatic payment terminals was 12.3 million in December 2017. According to the EMIS report for the month of October 2022, there were 33.3 million, an increase of almost three times".

"The dematerialization of payments appears to be a fact," he added.

The deputy governor also said that the observed evolution "shows that bank customers are beginning to favor digital means to have access to banking services and carry out transactions".

He also referred to Multicaixa Express, an application launched by EMIS with the aim of "dematerializing debit cards".

"The number of operations executed in this application in October 2022 was 34.2 million, it should be noted, higher than the movements in TPA", he said, adding that the "significant increase in the number of financial transactions using electronic means of payment is indicative of how fast the penetration of products and services other than those typically offered through the bank branch channel can be".
