Adalberto Costa Júnior: Angola “experiences the disenchantment of its populations towards their rulers”

The UNITA leader called on his deputies to work “towards the implementation of a broad constitutional review”, which does not incorporate “Machiavellian projects to perpetuate themselves in power”.

Adalberto Costa Júnior was speaking at the opening of the XI parliamentary days of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), which take place in Malanje under the motto "UNITA Parliamentary Group – for Democracy, Citizenship and Inclusive Development", highlighting that after 48 years of national independence and 21 years of peace, the country "experiences the disenchantment of its populations towards their rulers".

According to Adalberto Costa Júnior, the party has 90 deputies, "which are not so few anymore", which must necessarily translate into an increase in its capacity and performance as a democratic and patriotic opposition.

"During the parliamentary year that is about to begin in the National Assembly, UNITA deputies must work towards the implementation of a broad constitutional review. But not the review that the regime intends and which, in fact, would represent a constitutional coup, in order to incorporate Machiavellian projects to perpetuate themselves in power", he advised.

"The constitutional review that we seek, which also involves a review of the General State Budget Law, must pursue the objective of putting an end to the abusive use that the President of the Republic and Holder of the Executive Power has been making of the Budget", he added.

The UNITA leader highlighted that, after peace, despite two moments of rising oil prices in international markets, "which provided, and still provide, today, substantive foreign exchange earnings", Angola remains "very far from standards of human development , having not achieved any of the millennium development goals".

"The country we have today is characterized by a profound social, economic and institutional crisis", said Adalberto Costa Júnior, exemplifying the situation with "young people queuing up at embassies looking for an opportunity to leave the country, without the rulers show any concern about these glaring warning signs."

UNITA's top leader also highlighted that, a year after the elections, "it would be normal to expect a cycle of governance that analyzed the negative approaches that preceded the electoral period and corrected them towards the consolidation of a Democratic State and the Law, in the sense of the achievement of National Reconciliation, in the sense of promoting development, in the sense of correcting asymmetries, but unfortunately none of that happened".

"We have a government incapable of fulfilling its electoral promises, a government determined to keep the judicial system submissive and a government that constantly violates the rights and freedoms of citizens. An executive branch that exhibits extreme censorship in public media, without any modesty, a government that lost control of ethical and moral limits in the search for political advantages, destroying the image of institutions, displaced from their traditional missions and placed in the promotion of hatred", he stressed.

According to Adalberto Costa Júnior, Angolans also have "a governance that persists in hiring without public competitions, in the institutionalization of corruption, in the sale of public assets for waste, in the promotion of monopolies that destroy the economic fabric and combat the business sector" .

These parliamentary days, added the UNITA leader, are to "reflect on how to rescue the hope of a generous people".

"The parliamentary group must embrace strategies that allow the country to be rescued from a group of oligarchs who are fattening their personal assets in the shadow of a party and client system" stated the representative, asking deputies to put all their knowledge, intelligence and dedication to service to the Angolan and the construction of an Angola that takes better care of its children, "that restores hope in a better future for all".

"That the parliamentary group take legislative initiatives that allow the implementation of local authorities in 2024 and that expose without limits the parties that turn their backs on their people and lead them to poverty and suffering", urged Adalberto Costa Júnior, stating that if "the UNITA were government", the first local elections would have been held this year, simultaneously and in all municipalities in the country.
