According to a Government document, which Lusa had access to this Friday, which specifies the amount of debt service payments per year, until 2033, Angola will have to pay 14.53 billion dollars next year, double the 7.27 billion dollars already disbursed until August this year.

The increase in amounts, starting next year and until the end of the decade, led the Minister of Finance to say, in an interview with Lusa this week, on the sidelines of her participation in the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, that the debt will be the central question in the coming years.

"Until 2029 we will have challenging times and so we will have to be creative to address the issue of infrastructure, but we also cannot stop everything because Angola is a huge country with many needs, at the same time we have to be conservative to not worsen our situation", said the Finance Minister in the interview with Lusa.

Until the end of the decade, Angola will experience permanent tension between the need to invest in infrastructure and the desire to control debt.

In the document with the amounts to be paid for the debt, it is noted that the peak is reached in 2024, but remains above 10 billion in the following years: in 2025 Angola will pay 11.91 billion, followed by 10.99 in the year next, 8.9 billion in 2027 and 10.54 billion in 2028.

From then on, the amounts begin to decrease significantly, to 7.71 billion in 2029, and to 4.72 billion dollars in the following year, maintaining the downward trajectory to 2.4 billion in 2031, rising thereafter to 3.91 billion in 2032 and falling again to 1.44 billion in 2033, the last year shown in the document.

Angola is, along with the Portuguese-speaking Cape Verde and Mozambique, one of the eight African countries with the highest debt-to-GDP ratio, reaching 84.9 percent this year and 77.1 percent in 2024, according to most recent data from the IMF, expressed in the report on the evolution of sub-Saharan African economies.
