Angola is the "only country" in Central Africa where covid-19 continues to grow

Angola's panorama in light of the covid-19 pandemic is worrying the authorities. The Angolan Gilberto da Piedade Veríssimo, president of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC) since last August, admitted that Angola is the "only country" in Central Africa where the virus has been growing. This concern led the CEEAC to prepare the sending of a team of epidemiologists, in order to try to understand where the fight against covid-19 is in the country.

The person in charge said that it is necessary to know what is failing to try to stabilize the situation. "We have a particular situation. It is the fact that in the region Angola is currently the only country that has a growth in cases of covid-19 and also deaths from the disease," he said, at the end of a meeting with the President, João Lourenço.

Cited by the newspaper O País, Gilberto Veríssimo admitted that the remaining countries in that region already have the disease practically under control, with Angola missing that step.

The sending of the team serves to help Angola understand what is failing "and perhaps a look from the outside can help to understand some things that eventually will not have been seen".

The president of CEEAC said that the possibility of sending the team of epidemiologists was presented to João Lourenço and he agreed.

This team, according to him, also worked in the continent when the Ebola virus appeared.

The president of the ECCAC Commission has been in Luanda since Sunday, aiming to establish contacts with the Angolan authorities. The CEEAC is composed of Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and São Tomé and Príncipe.
