Ana Paula de Carvalho said that a multisectoral committee has been set up to analyse the situation, which could have several causes, either natural or caused by a product.
"We are waiting for the results of the analyses to come out so that we can make a statement and see whether mitigation measures are necessary or not", said the minister, speaking to Angolan Public Television, promising to make a statement as soon as the results are available.
The minister called on citizens to avoid swimming and other activities at sea, as well as eating fish, stressing that it is urgent to clarify the situation that has mainly affected the areas of the port of Luanda and the fishing port due to this substance.
The Minister of the Environment stressed that this is the first time that a situation of this magnitude has occurred.
"Because it is something that has not gone unnoticed by the naked eye, and we do not need to use microscopes to check it, that is why this committee was set up with everyone involved in the sea", she stressed.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Ministry of the Environment said that a fluid with unknown characteristics had been detected on the sea surface in areas close to the port of Luanda and the fishing port and adjacent regions, and that a technical team had been mobilized to investigate the origin and extent of the problem.
"It was observed that, during the weekend until September 10 [Tuesday] there was a slowdown in the appearance of the stains. However, on September 11 [Wednesday], the fluid reappeared in large proportions, covering additional areas, including the bay of Luanda, the port of Luanda, the fishing port and the bay of Mussulo", the document highlights.
Images and videos circulating on social media show large stains of a substance that has yet to be identified on the coast of Luanda.
