Elections: UNITA says that discrepancy of more than 500 thousand votes turns results in its favor

UNITA pointed out discrepancies of more than 500,000 votes in the elections and stated that 347,000 were subtracted from the party, altering, in its favor, the results announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNU).

According to the leader of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Adalberto da Costa Júnior, who presented the data in Luanda this Monday, the counting of votes carried out based on the summary minutes held by UNITA may introduce changes in the results.

"The data collected by the UNITA counting and tabulation center reveal huge and unacceptable differences from those published by the CNE", he highlighted.

According to the figures presented, 347,436 votes were subtracted from UNITA in 15 provincial constituencies and 185,825 were added to the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) in 16 provincial constituencies, a sum of 533,261 votes.

"A number capable of producing changes in the final results released by the CNE with a very visible impact on the number of mandates in provincial and national circles and naturally on the final results", said the president of UNITA in a statement to journalists.

The final results announced last week by the CNE gave the MPLA victory, with an absolute majority, with 51.17 percent of the votes, a result contested by UNITA, which obtained 43.95 percent.

With these results, the MPLA elected 124 deputies and UNITA elected 90 deputies, almost double the 2017 elections.

But according to Adalberto da Costa Júnior, if the final results published by the CNE are adopted, and the subtracted votes (347,436 votes) are added to the UNITA result, the party would go from 2,756,786 votes (announced by the CNE) to 3,104. 222 votes corresponding to 49.5 percent and; subtracting from the MPLA's result the extra votes attributed to it (185,825 votes), this political force would drop from 3,209,409 allocated by the CNE to 3,023,584 votes, corresponding to 48.2 percent, which means that it would lose the elections.

In Luanda alone, the UNITA count points to a difference of 214,679 votes subtracted, and the minutes held by the party are currently being publicly disclosed, he exemplified.

"The minutes that support the count of UNITA's parallel ballot can be consulted. The system that processed them can also be audited", underlined the leader, who also pointed out illegalities related to the excess number of voters, the existence of two summary minutes to polling station and non-publication of electoral rolls in accordance with the law.

"The discrepancies highlighted above indicate the existence of willful manipulation of the results, which can only be clarified by comparing the minutes held by the competitors and the CNE", declared Adalberto da Costa Júnior.

The UNITA leader considered that the violations of the law mentioned "promoted the obstruction of the right to vote, with an impact on electoral results", and defended that these acts should be criminally held accountable by their authors, holders of public functions.
