Travel to the Schengen area is only allowed if it is considered "essential"

People with a valid Schengen visa will only have the green light to fly if they can prove that their trip is essential. The information was revealed this Tuesday by the Consulate of Portugal in Luanda, in reaction to information that was circulating in some media and that this ban was the responsibility of TAAG, which has already refuted such information.

"Valid Schengen visa holders can only be allowed to travel if they can prove that it is an essential trip," the consulate said in a statement sent to Angop.

The restrictions to fly to the Schengen area (of which Portugal is part) remain in force, explained the consulate and, for this reason, only those who can prove that their trip is essential will be able to board.

According to the Recommendation (EU) 2020/1886 of the European Council, essential trips are those made by citizens of the European Union, citizens of the States associated with the Schengen area and members of their families, and citizens of other countries with legal residence in a Member State of the European Union.

Travel for professional, study, health or humanitarian reasons is also considered essential.

Thus, the entity explained that "only" those who live in countries that are part of a list approved by the Schengen States and which has been integrated into Portuguese legislation can move freely.

The countries that belong to the Schengen area, specifically Liechetenstein, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom are not subject to the movement restrictions imposed because of the covid-19 pandemic. The restrictions are also lifted for 11 countries outside the Schengen area: Australia, Canada, China, South Korea, Georgia, Japan, New Zealand, Rwanda, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay.

The remaining countries, which are not part of this list, are subject to the restrictions imposed. The consulate stated that it does not "issue boarding permits, but only reviews specific cases when they are eventually submitted to it by airlines".

"This analysis is based on current legislation and is the result of permanent consultation with the border authorities in Portugal," the note concludes.
