Angolans injured in housing project advertised by Pelé manifest on Saturday

More than 300 people who claim to have been injured by Build Angola's Brazilian entrepreneurs for 53.9 million dollars between 2007 and 2011 hold a demonstration on Saturday to claim their rights.

At stake is a housing project for the acquisition of villas and stores to be built in the projects "Bem Morar", "Centro Comercial Build Boulevard", "Copacabana Palace", "Nossa Villa", "Nosso Lar", "Quintas do Rio Bengo", "The One" and "Villa Gonga", in Luanda.

The call for the demonstration is included in a communiqué issued by the Build Commission, which marks the act between 8am and 12pm on Saturday, with a parade along the Largo Serpa Pinto to the Calçadão da Marginal, where they will display posters and canvas allusive to the protest.

In the note, the commission stresses that "more than 300 peaceful Angolan citizens" had "the eagerness to achieve a more dignified living situation for themselves and their respective families", and, in this sense, "deposited their hopes and financial resources (most of the time using bank loans) in the hands of several companies of the Build Angola Group".

In 2018, the victims turned to the Angolan Attorney General's Office (PGR) to get their money or houses back, filing a civil lawsuit against the project's promoters, who are on the run.

The properties, according to a PGR statement issued at the time, were advertised and sold as part of several real estate projects, whose promoters are Brazilian citizens.

According to PGR, these are António Paulo de Azevedo Sodré, Paulo Henriques Freitas Marinho, João Gualberto Júnior, Ricardo Boer Bemete, Rodrigo António Lazi and Manuel Sarina Júnior, who, in Angola, created Build Angola, a company that, in fact, never existed.

PGR confirmed that in 2012, the injured citizens had filed a criminal complaint with that judicial institution, which, for this reason, opened 29 lawsuits for evidence of the practice of association of criminals, fraud for fraud and money laundering.

The project of the Brazilian construction company was widely publicized in Angola, with the Brazilian Pelé, the "King of Football", giving the face to the advertising campaign.

The infractions denounced in 2012 were amnestied by Law no. 11/2016 of 12 August, leading to the filing of the files, without prejudice of the eventual civil liability for losses and damages.

However, the PGR, in accordance with the Angolan Constitution, decided in 2018 to file civil actions in defense of the collective and diffuse interests at stake, which have not yet been decided.
