Angola marks "qualitative changes" in cooperation with the European Union

Cooperation between Angola and the European Union (EU) has known "qualitative changes" with the introduction of innovative methods of relationship, said this Tuesday the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António.

According to the Governor, who was speaking at the opening of the 5th Angola-European Union Ministerial Meeting, by videoconference between Luanda and Brussels, as part of the "Joint Path" programme, the meeting aims at more active and participatory cooperation.

"The Republic of Angola has the EU as an important partner for its economic and social development, it is a model of cooperation of mutual advantage for the progress and well-being of our populations," said Téte António.

Minister Téte António and the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrel, chair the meeting.

The minister reported that the cooperation between Luanda and Brussels, "not only characterized by the economic component", has known "qualitative changes" with the introduction of innovative methods of relationship.

Relations between Angola and the EU "are comprehensive, as the European Union wants to do with the whole of Africa, if we talk about the future summit of the European Union and African Union".

The National Development Agenda of the Republic of Angola, said the ruler, "is based not only on the need for national expectations of growth, but also on the opportunities arising from regional economic dynamics" and the possibility of creating even closer and more diversified partnerships.

"We remain engaged in our permanent and frank desire to continue to strengthen our multiform cooperation based on mutual respect," he concluded.

The political and security situation in Southern Africa and the Great Lakes Region, as well as in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) space, "with special attention to political and security matters", are items on the agenda.

Preparatory issues for the EU-Africa Summit, scheduled for the end of October, are also on the agenda for the meeting, which also addresses aspects of cooperation in the trade area.

The Angola-European Union "Joint Path" programme was signed in July 2012 in Brussels in order to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between the parties.
