According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in the past 24 hours there have been over 9666 cases of the disease in the 55 member states and 5840 recovered, for a total of 1,205,671.
According to Africa CDC, Southern Africa continues to record the highest number of cases of infection and deaths, with 17,647 fatalities out of a universe of 732,631 infected.
In South Africa alone, the continent's most affected country, there are 670,766 cases and 16,398 deaths.
North Africa, the second most affected area by the pandemic, has 326,867 people infected and 10,838 dead and, in West Africa, the number of infections is 175,420, with 2603 fatalities.
The East Africa region now accounts for 167,243 cases and records 3275 fatalities and, in turn, in Central Africa, there are 57,553 cases and 1077 deaths.
Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities (after South Africa) has 5883 deaths and 102,840 infected, and Morocco accounts for 2069 deaths and 117,685 cases.
Algeria followed, with 50,910 cases of infection registered and 2010 fatalities.
Among the six countries most affected are Nigeria, with 58,324 infected and 1108 dead, and Ethiopia, with 73,332 cases and 1,170 fatalities.
In relation to African countries whose official language is Portuguese, Angola leads in number of deaths and Mozambique in number of cases.
Angola records 174 deaths and 4718 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 dead and 5028 cases), Cape Verde (57 dead and 5771 cases), Mozambique (58 dead and 7983 cases), Guinea-Bissau (39 dead and 2324 cases ) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 dead and 911 cases).
