Amnesty International asks winning party to investigate murders and arrests

Amnesty International calls on the party that wins the general election to investigate the killings, arbitrary arrests and starvation, which it believes are setting the tone ahead of the 24 August general election.

:

The recommendations are contained in a document presented this Tuesday, entitled "Por um voto que conte para a observância dos Direitos Humanos: Manifesto de direitos humanos para Angola face às eleições gerais de 2022", in which the human rights organization denounces a "intense repression of human rights in recent years, including the silencing of all forms of dissent".

The repression by the authorities, adds Amnesty, has increased at a time when Angola is witnessing the deterioration of the humanitarian situation, exacerbated by hunger caused by drought in the southern region of the country.

The organization also mentions that, at the height of the covid-19 pandemic, in 2020, the Angolan security forces, responsible for implementing the restrictions, killed at least seven children and young people, using excessive and lethal force.

"Amnesty International calls on candidates in the upcoming elections to publicly commit, if elected, to conducting prompt, thorough, impartial, independent, transparent and effective investigations into all killings and holding suspects to account in fair trials," they urge.

Ensure access to justice and effective remedies for victims and their families, bring to justice all members of the security forces accused of using excessive and lethal force against peaceful protesters, and provide access to justice and effective remedies victims and their families, are other calls for attention.

AI also appeals to the winner of the elections to work with the international community to quickly allow humanitarian aid to reach victims of drought and famine in the southern region of Angola.
