Situation in the Great Lakes dominates Téte Antónios trip to six African countries

The situation in the Great Lakes was the main topic addressed by the head of national diplomacy, Téte António, during his visit to several African countries between 27 July and this Thursday, the official said.

The visit of Téte António, as special envoy of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, began in Namibia, and before ending this Thursday in Senegal, included Botswana, Kenya, Ethiopia and South Africa.

In a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is noted that Téte António told the Presidents of the six countries he visited "the efforts made by" João Lourenço "to stabilize the region, focusing on the political and diplomatic situation in Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo), as well as in the Central African Republic, in addition to the African Union's activities concerning Development and Peace and Security related matters to silence the weapons on the continent".

"Overall, all the heads of state contacted, namely Hage Geingob from Namibia, Mokgweetsi Masisi from Botswana, Uhuru Kenyatta from Kenya, Sahle-Work Zewde from Ethiopia, Cyril Ramaphosa from South Africa and Macky Sall , from Senegal, expressed their unconditional support" João Lourenço, "in his capacity as Champion of Peace and Reconciliation in Africa, designated by his peers at the Extraordinary Summit on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government in Africa, held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, the May 28, 2022," the statement continued.

Regarding the last stage of this trip through six African countries, the press release from the Angolan Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlights that Téte António delivered to the Senegalese President, and acting president of the African Union, Macky Sall, a message from João Lourenço, in which he expressed the desire to consolidate bilateral friendship ties.

The press release concludes by mentioning that Macky Sall, "praised the efforts" of João Lourenço "for the pacification of the Great Lakes region and its mediation in a coordinated way, as it proves to be a complex process, taking into account the 'nexus' Peace, Security and Development".

During his visit to Addis Ababa, where the African Union is headquartered, the head of diplomacy also delivered a message to Moussa Faki Mahamat, president of the African Union Commission.
