Biocom records fire caused by alleged poaching

A major fire affected the sugarcane plantation at Fazenda Salto do Cavalo owned by Biocom, a national bioenergy company, supposedly caused by hunting, but without causing any casualties, the company located in Malanje province said.

In a press release, Biocom mentions that the fire broke out on Wednesday morning, with all available means being immediately mobilized and the fire extinguished ten hours later.

According to the company, which produces sugar, ethanol and electricity from sugarcane, in a first analysis of the results of this fire, significant losses were found, "because the raw material to be harvested for treatment and production of sugar, alcohol and clean electricity".

"Everything indicates that this fire was caused on purpose due to the practice of hunting, so the company's administration, together with the local authorities, are investigating its origins, so that serious situations of this nature do not happen again in its facilities. and/or in the surrounding areas, namely in the cultivation areas", says the note.

The company undertook to intensify "local communication campaigns, appealing to the residents of the surrounding areas not to use the practices of setting fire to the forest, as a way of hunting wild animals".
