President of CASA-CE minimizes Patriotic Front and affirms coalition as "the real front"

The president of the CASA-CE coalition devalued the claims of the United Patriotic Front, a political bloc in the opposition that aspires to power, and considered that "the real front" is its formation, which is "very compact and cohesive".

In an interview with Lusa, Manuel Fernandes said he has "difficulty understanding" the United Patriotic Front, an initiative that "is not a coalition, but a political space of agglutination of political wills and may also absorb actors from civil society, but to be incorporated in a particular list."

"We, CASA-CE, are an electoral coalition and we are the real front, because we are even a convergence, it would be negative and a great irresponsibility to dissolve CASA to then join another political project, it is not possible," said the politician, questioned about this possibility.

The United Patriotic Front is composed of the presidents of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA, the largest opposition party), Adalberto Costa Júnior, of the Democratic Bloc (BD), Filomeno Vieira Lopes, and the coordinator of the political project PRA JA Serving Angola, Abel Chivukuvuku, who promises to "dislodge" the MPLA from power.

The president of the opposition Convergência Ampla de Salvação - Coligação Eleitoral (CASA-CE) (Broad Salvation Convergence - Electoral Coalition), thus rules out joining the 'Frente' and assures that his political grouping will run as an electoral coalition in the next elections, manifesting itself open to "other political and civil society wills.

"I am here fighting to consolidate CASA-CE, as a political instrument with a vocation for power, and I am also interested that President João Lourenço leaves power, that he goes to the opposition, but who should be there? Why not Manuel Fernandes? It is my right as a political leader", he noted.

Manuel Fernandes is the third president of CASA-CE, founded in 2012 by Abel Chivukuvuku, and replaced Admiral André Mendes de Carvalho "Miau", removed at the request of the parties that support the electoral coalition.

The departure of Abel Chivukuvuku, removed in 2019 due to internal disagreements, contributed to the departure of several coalition militants and to the division of the coalition's parliamentary group, which elected 16 deputies in 2017, but today is fragmented.

At the head of the coalition since last February, Manuel Fernandes says that the "fissures" he found in the coalition structure, especially as a result of Chivukuvuku's departure, "are completely healed" as a result of his strategy of "internal reorganization and restoring the dynamics" of CASA-CE.

"We can say that the fissures are completely healed, we only have the case that we are dealing with now, which is the Democratic Bloc," he said.

CASA-CE suspended earlier this month the political participation of the BD until 2022, because it "decided not to renew the participation agreement" with the coalition in next year's general elections.

Manuel Fernandes, also a member of the National Assembly, says he is "saddened" by the current division in the parliamentary group, guaranteeing that the "future will be marked by the union and framing of young people for better representation in parliament."

"We are not saying that older people are not valid, but we must recognize that today we need to reverse the previous framework," he shot back.

In the pre-election context, the politician made it known that CASA-CE develops several actions, framed in three main vectors: mobilization, framing and political training.

"We are working and soon we will submit our ideas for the elections, that is, the government pre-program. We are going to submit it for society's discussion, seek other contributions so that in fact it is an instrument that counts on the participation of all Angolans," concluded Manuel Fernandes, a politician with a degree in business administration.
