In a message on the occasion of the date, the National Union for Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) underlines that between 1992, when the first elections in Angola took place, and 2002, the year in which Jonas Savimbi died in combat, despite national and international adversities, its founding leader "was a firm promoter of peace, for which he even donated his own life".

"Today, even the younger generations recognize the justice of Jonas Savimbi's struggles and his cause gains more sympathy every day," the statement said.

According to UNITA, "as a man of thought and especially of action, his deeds marked 'ad eternum' the history of Angola and won admirers, indefatigable followers and also enemies that, fortunately, are increasingly reduced in number".

The 87th anniversary of Jonas Savimbi's birth is being commemorated by UNITA, under the slogan "Faithful to Jonas Savimbi's thought - Let's mobilize the patriots for the alternation of power".

For UNITA, "it is fair to say" that its founding leader lived to be "an exceptional awakener of consciences, a patriot, a nationalist and a Pan-Africanist of the highest calibre, a shrewd visionary, a rare revolutionary of extraordinary courage: intellectual, moral and physical".

"A true transformative leader, charismatic and avant-garde, a generous distributor of knowledge, a tireless spreader of convictions and a servant of freedom for the universal man," the note adds.

"Therefore, Jonas Savimbi is the inexhaustible source of inspiration of our soul force in order to work, without ceasing, for the triumph of his project of society for Angola," the party stresses.

Jonas Malheiro Savimbi was born on August 3, 1934, in Munhango, Bié province, and was killed in combat by the Angolan armed forces on February 22, 2002.
