Covid-19: Africa with 1311 more deaths and 29,833 new cases

Africa has recorded 1311 more covid-19-associated deaths and 29,833 more infections with the new coronavirus in the past 24 hours, according to data from the African Union Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

The total number of cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection now stands at 7,286,927, while the number of deaths stands at 183,763.

The number of recoveries on the continent, meanwhile, now stands at 6,468,009.

By region, Southern Africa remains the most affected, with almost half of the total cases on the African continent - 3,478,862, of which 3,142,293 were considered recovered, and 96,144 deaths.

North Africa records 2,171,034 infections, with 1,829,391 recovered and 58,938 deaths.

East Africa, meanwhile, has 859,019 cases, 805,933 recovered, and 17,945 deaths associated with covid-19.

West Africa, meanwhile, has 566,029 cases, with 511,172 recovered, and 7561 deaths.

Central Africa is the region with the fewest cases - 211,983 cases, of which 179,220 recovered, and 3175 deaths.

Among the countries most affected by the virus are South Africa, with 2,605,586 cases and 77,141 deaths; Morocco, with 759,456 infected and 11,017 deaths, and Tunisia, with 625,688 cases and 21,905 deaths.

Zambia, with 202,261 cases of infection and 3529 deaths, Egypt with 285,358 infections and 16,619 deaths, and Ethiopia with 289,274 cases and 4478 deaths, as well as Nigeria with 182,503 and 2219 deaths also appear among the most affected.

So do Botswana, with 136,758 and 1973 deaths, and Libya, with 281,930 infected by the disease and 3904 deaths.

As far as Portuguese-speaking countries are concerned, Mozambique registers 138,749 cases and 1716 deaths, followed by Angola (44,617 cases and 1100 deaths), Cape Verde (34,397 infected and 300 deaths), Equatorial Guinea (8972 cases and 123 deaths), Guinea-Bissau (5123 cases and 90 deaths) and São Tomé and Príncipe (2488 infected and 37 deaths).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt on February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection on February 28.

Covid-19 has caused at least 4,353,003 deaths worldwide, among more than 206.7 million infections by the new coronavirus recorded since the start of the pandemic, according to the most recent assessment by the Agence France-Presse.

The respiratory disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China, and currently with variants identified in countries such as the United Kingdom, India, South Africa, Brazil or Peru.
