Angolan Sebastião da Silva Isata, president of the AU Commission on International Law and former vice-minister of Foreign Affairs, acknowledged that the Executive has been striving to combat corruption and assert itself as the rule of law.

In an interview with Televisão Pública de Angola (TPA), Sebastião da Silva Isata considered that each president had a different role: Agostinho Neto had the responsibility to lead the liberation struggle, José Eduardo dos Santos had the obligation to continue the path of liberation and João Lourenço has to consolidate democracy and the rule of law.

Arguing that the path traced by the country has proven that in a democracy no one is above the law, the responsible said it is still necessary to give more attention to the needs of the population, especially the young.

Affirming that it is crucial to create more jobs for young people, he lamented the death of the 19 000 of the more than 110 000 young people who tried to cross the Mediterranean into Europe between 2019 and 2020.

The Angolan also suggested that the country strengthen its commitment to scientific research, with the aim of improving the national education system. In the eyes of Sebastião da Silva, this improvement will allow the population to have a higher quality of education and thus ensure greater integration of Angolans in international bodies.

Overall, he was proud of Angola's diplomatic performance and congratulated the country for having been a member of the UN Security Council twice.

The International Law Commission, chaired by Sebastião da Silva Isata, was created in 2009 and aims to codify and systematize the development of international law, particularly on the African continent.
