With half a million dollars, Japan finances the demining of Quibala municipality

A press release from that diplomatic mission, to which the Lusa agency had access, states that the demining project, financed in March 2022, with a value of more than 580,000 dollars, ends on Wednesday.

The project implemented by the Association of Angolan Mine Action Professionals (Apacominas) cleared 1,044,034 square meters of land and removed 2,347 artifacts, including 42 explosive mines.

The note emphasizes that the cleaning of that area aimed to "create a safer life for residents in the area in the face of the dangers of mines and other benefits".

The partners in this project were the National Mine Action Agency (ANAM), the provincial government of Cuanza Sul and the municipal administration of Quibala.

The Government of Japan supports several local projects in Angola, namely the Community Project Assistance (APC) program since 1989 and the Japanese Non-Governmental Organization Project Assistance program.

Since 1999, the Japanese country has supported various community projects in the area of mine clearance that exceed 16 million non-reimbursable dollars.

Mine accidents in Angola are still recurrent, the result of more than three decades of war, with several actors, including several operators from non-governmental organizations and the Angolan State, who, on the ground, carry out demining actions.

Angola cleared 90 percent of areas suspected of being contaminated by mines between 2015 and 2020, according to the country's authorities, yet it continues to be on the list of the ten most contaminated states in the world.

With more than 100 square kilometers of land suspected of having landmines and other traces of weapons, 21 years after the end of the war, the country continues to register deaths and mutilations of its citizens.
