The 13th Conference of Heads of State and Government of the CPLP, which marks the transition of the rotating presidency of this community of countries from Cape Verde to Angola, is scheduled for July 16 and 17 in Luanda, and will be held in person.
In the letter addressed to the Portuguese Parliament, Portugal's head of state requested authorization to travel to Luanda between July 15 and 19, with stopovers in São Tomé and Príncipe and Cape Verde.
When he visited Guinea-Bissau last May, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said he hoped his trip to Bissau would contribute to a CPLP summit with all the heads of state present in Luanda, noting that this has not happened.
Portugal has been represented at the highest level at CPLP summits, usually with the joint presence of the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister.
Created 25 years ago, the CPLP currently has nine member states: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, East Timor and Equatorial Guinea - whose accession in 2014 created controversy.
