More sport on television: ESPN hits the DStv grid

The MultiChoice Group and The Walt Disney Company Africa earlier this week announced the signing of a partnership that will bring a significant addition of sports channels to their packages. The agreement will result in the availability of two ESPN channels, 24 hours a day to DStv customers, starting on July 29th.

By showcasing the main sports in the US and European football, fans from across the continent will now be able to see the top American leagues, including the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) , through ESPN and ESPN2.

The channels will also feature live football from the English Football League (EFL), Dutch Eredivisie and Major League Soccer (MLS), West African Football Union (WAFU) Nations Cup, as well as boxing tournaments.

In a statement sent to VerAngola, DStv says that customers will be able to count on the long awaited return of the NBA's bio-bubble on July 31 with two live matches that day. LeBron James and the LA Lakers repeat their rivalry in the city with the LA Clippers on ESPN, and later the Orlando Magic face the Brooklyn Nets. The Major League Baseball (MLB) regular season will also feature on ESPN, starting July 29, with the New York Yankees against the Philadelphia Phillies.

With this new agreement signed, the MultiChoice Group reaffirms its commitment to continue offering the best content to its subscribers. “As Africa's leading audiovisual entertainment platform, we remain loyal to our commitment to providing our customers with a selection of the best content, we strive to provide the best international content and also the best local content” says Calvo Mawela, CEO of the MultiChoice Group.

“ESPN’s appealing content and unique personality will be a complementary addition to the MultiChoice Group’s sporting offering,” says Christine Service, Senior Vice President and Country Manager at Walt Disney Company Africa. “We are excited to bring the achievements and triumphs of international and local athletes, to bring an innovative program and to tell quality stories to our audience”, he adds.

Along with live sports programming, viewers will also be able to follow the latest films, series, news, talk shows and sports documentaries.
