João Lourenço and other MPLA leaders will be tested at covid-19 after positive case

About 50 members of the MPLA Political Bureau, including the President, João Lourenço, are going to be tested at covid-19, after a positive case in a leader who participated in the last meeting of the party summit.

According to the spokesman of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), Albino Carlos, a case of covid-19 was confirmed among a member of the Political Bureau who was present at the meeting on the 30th of June, where the party president and chief executive, João Lourenço.

Albino Carlos said that the politician in question, whose name he declined to reveal, tested positive for covid-19 as part of a test "as a result of a visit he was going to make to a province, by force majeure".

Taking into account the result, "as a public health measure, and following the recommendations of health authorities and the World Health Organization, there is a need to screen all contacts," he explained, indicating that all members of the MPLA summit who participated in the meeting will do this Tuesday the test "to confirm if they are infected" and to try to "cut the chain of transmission".

The MPLA's highest body has 72 members, but less than 50 people attended the meeting to comply with social distance and the rules of the calamity state, according to Albino Carlos.

Members of the Political Bureau who are outside of Luanda, a province that is under sanitary fence, participated via video conference.

According to the MPLA spokesman, the party will continue to carry out its activities within "the new normal", following health recommendations.

"We will not change according to this case, we are living a new normal with the covid-19 pandemic, but we will continue to do our political activities.

We want to face and overcome the electoral challenges ", highlighted Albino Carlos, stressing that new technologies and distance communication are also being privileged.
