Huambo increases annual honey production to 600 tons and is already thinking about exports

The Forest Development Institute (IDF) in Huambo plans to increase honey production this year. Justifying the recent investments that have been made in the sector as the cause of this increase, the IDF has estimated that production will exceed 600 tonnes this year.

The institution plans to increase honey production by about 100 tonnes. According to IDF, current production is 500 tonnes, but this year the figure is expected to be around 600 tonnes.

Amilton Caetano, head of the institute's technical services and supervision, explained to Angop that this increase is related to the reinforcement and investment that the sector has received in recent times.

The delivery of complete beekeeping kits to cooperatives and associations and the fact that this year there was no drought, are some of the investments that will contribute to the increase in production, said the responsible.

Amilton Caetano also highlighted the launch last year of the Beekeeping Promotion Program in Humabo, which has made it easier to access means of honey production.

Stressing that the amount of honey produced in the province is quite high, Amilton Caetano also made it known that beekeepers want to move forward with the export of this product and that the Ministry of Agriculture is already working in this direction, through contact with international institutions.

The municipalities of Ecunha, Cachiungo, Bailundo, Mungo and Chinjenje are the largest honey producers in the region, which has around 800 beekeepers.
