Angola becomes a middle-income country next year

It is already from February next year that Angola will become part of the Middle Income Countries (MIC), thus leaving the list of Least Developed Countries (LDC). The revelation was made by Sérgio dos Santos, Minister of Economy and Planning.

The governor said, quoted by Angop, that at the General Assembly of Nations in 2015, Angola presented a strategy to be implemented to make the change. That strategy included growth and sustainability of families, he said, explaining that the programs imposed by the country to help families have been very successful.

The holder of the Economy and Planning portfolio, who was speaking during the launch of the National Platform of Sustainable Development Goals, revealed that the strategy implemented is meeting all the requirements imposed by the United Nations (UN) on Agenda 2030 - adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2015.

This agenda consists of 17 sustainable development goals and 169 targets to be imposed by all UN member states. These goals aim to change sustainable development at economic, social and environmental levels by promoting human rights and combating inequality.

Sérgio dos Santos now believes that the support of the United Nations has been fundamental for the country to become part of the MICs.

Paolo Balladelli, resident coordinator of the United Nations Organisations System, said that Angola would have to work together with its partners to continue to transform the country.
