Police officer killed in a gunfight

A police officer was killed by a group of unidentified elements in the early hours of Tuesday in Luanda while conducting patrols in the neighborhood of Boa Fé, the border between the municipalities of Viana and Cacuaco, said this Tuesday a police source.

According to the director of the Institutional Communication and Press Office of the Luanda provincial police command, Nestor Goubel, the "unfortunate accident" occurred following the "exchange of fire" after the police crossed a group.

"He was in his usual exercise of patrolling and monitoring the actions to combat crime, especially in that conflictive terrain on the border between Cacuaco and Viana, specifically in the area of Good Faith where this accident will have occurred," Nestor Goubel told Lusa.

Nestor Goubel, who "strongly condemned the act", said investigations and police measures were already underway to find out who was responsible for the crime, stating that the perpetrators "must be held accountable".

"And we will certainly find the perpetrators of this barbaric crime," he assured.

The victim was the commander of the Good Faith police station, a border area between the municipalities of Cacuaco and Viana.

The police, he added, "have been carrying out their work, especially in the most critical areas, there we led our patrol and Commander Francisco was leading the patrols there with the purpose of restoring a sense of security to the populations".

The general commander of the police, Paulo de Almeida, told Lusa last week that the country's criminal situation is stable, noting, however, that there are always oscillations.

"Crimes have decreased appreciably, but there are still concerns, because violent crimes continue, such as homicides and robberies, and it is these that we have to face in order to reduce," he said.
