Judicial magistrates' remuneration statute to be updated

The remuneration statute of the judicial magistrates of Angola, from 1994, will be updated, with emphasis on those of the Public Ministry, so that they develop their activity "with seriousness and competence", announced this Tuesday the Angolan jurist Raul Araújo.

Raul Araújo, member of the Commission for the Reform of Justice and Law, was speaking on the margins of the first meeting, which served to evaluate the work that has been going on since 2016 and the next tasks until 26 May 2022.

According to the lawyer, it is necessary to dignify the activity of the judicial magistrates, remembering that their statute is from 1994 and 26 years later "we must update the diplomas".

"That statute for judicial magistrates of 1994 responded to a certain judicial organisation, which was the law of the unified system of justice, today we have another judicial organisation, so the whole structure goes in that direction, the new judicial statute", he said.

Similarly, Raul Araújo continued, "the remuneration statute obeys to a new class (...) of judges that did not exist".

"Today we have the judges of law, of the first instance, we have the judges advisors to the higher courts and we now have the judges judges judges, who are from the Courts of Appeal. If there is no law with this provision, they will work on what legal basis," he asked, stressing the need to "urgently advance this kind of work.

The Commission for the Reform of Justice and Law, coordinated by the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Francisco Queiroz, was constituted on 26 May last, to conclude the elaboration of new legal diplomas, to monitor the process of implementation of the new system of judicial organization, to implement the technological model of management of the courts of common jurisdiction and in view of the need to proceed with the implementation of guidelines of the Training and Human Resources Program for the Justice Sector.

In addition to representatives of the Constitutional, Supreme and Audit Courts, the Attorney General's Office, the Civil House of the President of the Republic and the Angolan Bar Association, the committee is composed of jurists Raul Araújo, Carlos Feijó and Virgílio de Fontes Pereira.
