“Since we formalized it 25 years ago, the strategic partnership between the AU and the EU has been a success, we have achieved positive objectives for our peoples,” said the minister, who is also the chair of the AU executive council.
Referring to the EU's Global Gateway initiative – investment for development – the minister mentioned the importance of infrastructure projects on the African continent, giving the example of the Lobito Corridor, “which demonstrates our determination to move forward together”,
The AU-EU partnership has also served to “seek concrete solutions to issues in the fields of peace and security”, Teta António stressed, also mentioning cooperation on issues of development, trade, climate and human rights.
The minister was speaking at a press conference at the end of the meeting of heads of diplomacy from the two blocs in Brussels.
Teté António spoke in French and English during the press conference because the EU Council services did not provide interpretation from and into Portuguese.
The Lobito Corridor is a 1,344-kilometer railway line connecting the southern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), northwestern Zambia and Angola, which it passes through, to regional and global markets via the port of Lobito, which has received funding from the EU, among other entities.
At this meeting of ministers from the European Union and the African Union, “peace and security”, multilateralism and prosperity for the two blocs, as well as “populations, migration and mobility” were discussed, according to information provided by the EU Council.
