The party's founder, Euclides Luis de Castro, was the only candidate for president and was elected with 88.7 percent of the votes at the Constitutive Congress, which took place this weekend in Huambo.
The congress was attended by 200 delegates, who were also responsible for electing the organization's governing bodies.
In his opening speech, Luis de Castro highlighted the symbolic importance of choosing Huambo, “for everything it represents in Angola's recent political history”, and criticized the “past of divisions and hegemonies, of obsession with power, of centralization of the State, paralyzing bureaucracy and opportunities that are captured by networks of privilege”.
“Today we founded the Liberal Party with the firm confidence of those who carry a mission”, said Luis de Castro, pointing out the main lines of his political action: promoting structural reforms that unleash the country's economic potential; free enterprise as a driving force for development; reducing the weight of the state machine, combating inefficiency and the misappropriation of public resources; value family, civic spirit, work and education as pillars of national cohesion.
The Liberal Party was legalized by the Constitutional Court in February of this year, becoming Angola's 14th official party.
