Oftalmed has already produced more than 164 thousand ophthalmic lenses. Second assembly line is coming

The first and only ophthalmic lens factory in Central Africa and the PALOP countries, owned by the Angolan company Oftalmed, has already transformed and produced more than 164,000 lenses since its inauguration in January 2024. The data was revealed on the sidelines of a visit and meeting with stakeholders, for a debate on the state of visual health in Angola, held within the scope of the 1st Eye Health Forum in Angola.

Located in Viana (Luanda), the unit employs 50 people, producing and transforming more than 500 ophthalmic lenses per day, and the installation of a second assembly line is planned, which will allow for an increase in production capacity.

The factory received a visit and meeting with representatives of Ocular Eye Care Portugal, ANCAA - National Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted of Angola and NABP - Norwegian Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted, for a discussion on the needs and solutions of optometry in Angola.

Topics discussed included limited access to eye health services, lack of awareness and education about eye health and the importance of regular eye examinations, shortage of trained and qualified eye health professionals, including optometrists and ophthalmologists, lack of adequate and necessary infrastructure and equipment to provide comprehensive eye health services, and the high prevalence of cataracts and other eye diseases in Angola, leading to high rates of visual impairment and blindness.

"At Oftalmed we are fully committed to democratizing access to eye health care and promoting the development and well-being of communities. To fulfill this mission, we consider it extremely important to establish partnerships that allow us to go further and provide the best health care to those who really need it," said José Geraldes, technical director of Oftalmed, in a statement sent to VerAngola.

According to the official, the meeting resulted in "very fruitful conclusions on the state of visual health in Angola and what to do, together, to help improve eye health services and care provided to the Angolan population".

With 1800 square meters, the Oftalmed factory is equipped with the latest technology and equipment used in the production of ophthalmic lenses, with qualified staff and cutting-edge technology, aligned with international standards for the medical device industry.

The unit includes a laboratory for cutting and assembling all types of ophthalmic lenses into glasses, specifically frames, sunglasses, sports and labor protection glasses, among others.
