Oil companies invest more than 35 million for the largest private photovoltaic plant in the country

Construction work on Angola's largest private photovoltaic plant will begin in Lubango, Huíla province, with an investment of 35 million dollars, the infrastructure's promoters announced.

Quilemba Solar, a joint venture between TotalEnergies (51 percent), Sonangol (30 percent) and Maurel & Prom (19 percent), owns the project, which is scheduled to start production in April 2026 and should benefit around 40,000 families in the capital of the province of Huíla.

With an initial capacity of 35 megawatts (MW) and the possibility of reaching 80 MW in a second phase, this project is being built on a plot of 80 hectares and is expected to have 60,000 solar panels, high-efficiency bifacial photovoltaic modules.

According to the promoters' statement, the project has created more than 150 jobs for Angolans, who will work from the construction phase to the operational phase.

“The Quilemba solar plant will significantly reduce diesel consumption by approximately 29 million litres per year, reducing CO2 emissions by around 50 ktCO2eq/year and saving costs”, the document highlights.

The chairman of the Board of Directors of Sonangol, Sebastião Martins, quoted in the note, highlighted that this is the second project linked to the production of solar energy, which will impact on the reduction of imports of refined products, around 20 million litres.

In turn, the Managing Director and Country Chair of TotalEnergies Angola, Martin Deffontaines, highlighted that Quilemba Solar marks the company's multi-energy strategy, highlighting that the project has a concession license for 28 years.
