Critical minerals “represent a business opportunity” for the country

The consideration is from Mankenda Ambroise – who on behalf of the Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas proceeded, this Tuesday, to the opening of the second edition of the 'Mining Business' forum – who said that critical minerals symbolize business opportunities for Angola , as it is a country “endowed with considerable mining potential”.

:

"Currently, critical minerals represent a business opportunity for Angola", he said, adding that despite having a long way to go, the Executive "intends that mining production is diversified, including that of critical minerals" in order to assume a "fundamental role in the socio-economic development of the country, safeguarding public and social interests".

According to the official, the country "has a considerable mining potential for clean energy technologies that, among others, includes chromium, cobalt, copper, graphite, iron ore, lead, lithium, manganese, neodymium, praseodymium, nickel, silver, titanium and zinc".

Speaking at the opening of the event, Mankande Ambroise stressed that the African continent, in general, and Angola, in particular, "are potentially rich in critical minerals, and this wealth may constitute a good basis for the development of concrete mining projects to take advantage of opportunities of businesses that emerge from the energy transition".

In this sense, he considered that efforts should be made "to ensure in the right direction a fair and sustainable energy transition that the whole world is moving towards decarbonization aiming at zero net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050".

The official also said that currently "the world talks about minerals for the energy transition", and Angola is "one of the countries where there is a favorable geological environment to promote and develop projects for these types of minerals that will allow meeting future demands".

"Our country has significant deposits of critical minerals and, currently, 36 of the 51 minerals considered the most critical worldwide are known in Angola, some of which are about to start production", he added.

Taking into account this mining potential, he added, the country is and could be "a reliable source for the development of projects that ensure the production of critical minerals necessary for the energy transition, which should allow a significant part of the value chain of these minerals to be processed in the country".

Stating that the prospects are encouraging, he admitted the existence of challenges for the energy transition, causing Angola, in particular, and Africa, in general, "to make significant efforts to radically transform their mining project portfolios in order to take advantage of the business opportunities that the energy transition offers".

Among other aspects, the official also considered that the referred forum on mining transition appears at a time "when the Angolan executive is projecting the growth, development and diversification of the mining sector, aiming to attract potential investors who can work on a large scale (...), in line with the 2020-2063 African mining vision".

Still on the subject of the event, he said that it could "constitute a platform that will provide ample, interesting and growing debate".

The forum that runs until this Wednesday has as its motto the mining transition challenges and opportunities brought by critical minerals in the eyes of sectors that interact with the national extractive industry.
