Authorities support families with houses destroyed by elephant in Cuanza Norte

The municipal administration of Golungo Alto, in the province of Kwanza Norte, is helping five families, who saw their homes destroyed by an elephant, in an incident that caused seven injuries, local authorities said.

:

The case occurred on Wednesday night, when the mammal on the loose invaded two neighborhoods, having caused destruction and panic among the population, confirmed the interim administrator of Golungo Alto, speaking to Angolan public radio.

Maria Judite Barbosa said that the administration has surveyed the damage and will help the population that had their houses destroyed and some goods, such as crockery.

"We are going to provide plates and help erect the walls that were destroyed by the elephant," she said.

The official said that a visit was made to two of the seven victims, who are hospitalized in a hospital unit in the municipality.

The authorities also visited "two ladies who are still in the hospital", but "are already out of danger", and in Golungo Alto there are "two other patients", in whom "the situation is more worrying" and who were transferred.

"We will pay full attention to these people who have been victims of this event," he stressed.

The conflict between people and animals in Angola has been going on for several years, intensifying from the end of the war in the country, in 2002, when the animals began to return to their 'habitat'.

Besides elephants, the population complains, time and again, of the invasion of their plantations also by hippos.

Last year, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Environment and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) signed a memorandum for the implementation of the project to protect and mitigate the human/animal conflict and combat the illegal trade of native fauna and flora.

The project, which has funding from the 6th cycle of the Global Environment Facility (GEF 6), is valued at $4.1 million.
