FLEC-FAC asks Guinea-Bissau to cut off relations with Angola and support independence for Cabinda

Cabinda's independence movement, FLEC-FAC, called on Guinea-Bissau to support that province's self-determination and cut diplomatic relations with Angola, ensuring that the region is willing to share its wealth with “friends and partners”.

:

In a statement released, the political-military leadership of FLEC-FAC (Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda-Armed Forces of Cabinda) asks for a place in international institutions, namely the United Nations and calls on the presidents of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou -Nguesso, and Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, to support this step.

It also calls on the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, to take an initiative in this regard.

"FLEC-FAC today considers Guinea-Bissau as a sister state of Cabinda and its ally", stresses the organization in a statement asking the Government of that country "to break its diplomatic relations with Angola", stressing that Cabinda is ready to share their natural wealth with their friends and partners.

The movement's leadership also asks António Costa and Umaro Sissoco Embaló to nominate and send military attachés and diplomatic representatives to the FLEC-FAC bases to "reinforce strategic political relations" with the movement.

The province of Cabinda, where most of the country's oil reserves are concentrated, is not contiguous to the rest of the territory and local leaders have been defending independence for years, alleging an autonomous colonial history of Luanda.

FLEC, through its "armed wing", the FAC, fights for the independence of that province, claiming that the enclave was a Portuguese protectorate, as established in the Treaty of Simulambuco, signed in 1885, and not an integral part of the Angolan territory.

Cabinda is bordered on the north by the Republic of Congo, on the east and on the south by the Democratic Republic of Congo and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean.
