Democratic Bloc postpones elective convention due to "logistical issues"

The Bloco Democrático (BD) has again postponed its fourth National Convention, scheduled for May 28-30, for "logistical reasons," rescheduling it for the second half of June, a party source said Monday.

:

According to the spokesperson of the organizing committee of the BD conclave, Joaquim Lutambi, logistical issues, especially the unavailability of the 75 delegates, mostly teachers and students in final exams period, and the galloping rise in market prices competed for the postponement of the congress.

"And also the non-circulation of many public transports, due to covid-19, in the market the prices tripled what conditions to bring the number of delegates that are in other provinces of the country", justified the responsible.

Members of the National Council of the BD are expected to set on June 11 the new date for the IV Convention, which will also elect the new party president to replace Justino Pinto de Andrade, who has led the association since its foundation.

Joaquim Lutambi assured that due to the restrictions imposed by covid-19, the conclave should take place in the second fortnight of June, in only two and not three days, as it was initially scheduled.

Américo Vaz, Luís Nascimento and Filomeno Vieira Lopes are the three candidates running for the BD leadership, since Justino Pinto de Andrade is not running for his own succession, but only for the position of party vice-president.

BD, registered at the Constitutional Court (TC) since October 20, 2010, is one of the six political forces that make up the Convergência Ampla de Salvação de Angola - Coligação Eleitoral (CASA-CE), the third largest political force with 16 deputies in parliament.

Justino Pinto de Andrade, deputy for CASA-CE and current president of the BD, is a member of a historic family of militants of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

The Bloco Democrático should integrate a "single party front", together with the União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA) and members of the political project PRA-JA Servir Angola, to "remove the MPLA from power".

The politician Abel Chivukuvuku, who saw several times his political project PRA-JA Servir Angola rejected by the TS, should also join the BD and run as head of the list for the 2022 general elections, as reported by the press.

The campaign of the candidates running for the presidency, vice-presidency and secretary-general of the BD continues and is due to end on Thursday, according to Joaquim Lutambi.
