Suspended judge accuses chief justice of persecution

Agostinho António Santos, the Supreme Court counselor judge who was recently suspended, speaks of persecution by Joel Leonardo, president of the Supreme Court and the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSMJ), for having denounced alleged irregularities in the process of choosing the president of the National Electoral Commission (CNE).

In an interview with VOA, the suspended judge pointed the finger at Joel Leonardo and complained that the persecution he is being targeted aims to try to stop him from fighting the process that eliminated him from the race for the presidency of the CNE. However, Agostinho António Santos made it clear that he will not give up the fight.

"It is not a normal process, just note that President Joel is the president of the CSMJ, and was president of the contest to the CNE, in the background, the bottom line is the process of the CNE, they are making with that process does not reach the end, but it will reach the end," he said.

He also says that he has "faith in the fulfillment of the Constitution and the Law", even if some do not want "this to happen".

Agostinho António Santos was suspended from his duties for half a year, with total loss of pay and seniority in his career, and also denied access to the Supreme Court facilities.

The suspension came after the judge publicly disagreed with the choice of Manuel Pereira da Silva to assume the presidency of CNE and denounced alleged irregularities in the process.
