Covid-19: death toll in Africa rises to 3348 in over 111,000 cases

The death toll in Africa from covid-19 has increased to 3,348 in more than 111,000 cases of infection in 54 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent's pandemic.

According to data released by the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), the death toll has risen in the last 24 hours from 3246 to 3348 (+102), while infection cases have increased from 107,412 to 111,348 (+3936 ).

The total number of recovered patients increased from 42,626 to 44,630 (+2004).

North Africa is the region most affected by the disease on the continent, with 1620 dead and 34,367 infected with the new coronavirus.

West Africa records 611 deaths and 29,163 infections, while Southern Africa accounts for 451 deaths and 24,213 cases, almost all in a single country, South Africa (22,583).

Central Africa reports 334 fatalities in 11,416 cases and in East Africa there are 332 deaths and 12,189 reported cases.

Six countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Ghana - concentrate about half of the infections by the new coronavirus in the continent and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (764) and has 17,265 infections, followed by Algeria, with 600 fatalities and 8,306 infected.

South Africa is the third most dead (429), continuing to be the continent's country with the most covid-19 cases (22,583).

Morocco totals 199 fatalities and 7433 cases, Nigeria reports 226 deaths and 7,839 cases, while Ghana has 32 deaths and 6683 cases.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau is the one with the most infections, with 1178 cases, and records six deaths.

Cape Verde has 380 infections and three deaths and São Tomé and Príncipe records 291 cases and 11 deaths.

Mozambique has 194 infected patients and Angola has 69 confirmed cases of covid-19 and four died.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has had 719 positive cases of infection and seven deaths for several days, according to Africa CDC.
