Hundreds of workers are expected to lose jobs after emergencies, managers warn

Hundreds of workers in the oil and hotel sectors are expected to lose their jobs after the emergency on behalf of covid-19, the managers announced this Friday, justifying "difficulties in paying wages" and "keeping the companies functional".

For operators, the suspension of jobs and redundancies "will be inevitable" because the sectors are still "severely affected" by the pandemic, and the government's support for this "dramatic framework" is considered urgent.

According to the human resources director of Socinger Angola, hotel network manager, any company "inevitably" will have to suspend employment contracts or layoffs.

"Because it is impossible for the Government, which at this time has no conditions, to sustain even at the social security level plans that are much higher than what is prepared," he said this Friday at the end of a meeting with government bodies.

In statements to journalists, the manager said that at the level of the network under his management nearly 50 percent of workers should be laid off because of current occupation rates below 90 percent.

"When you have a hotel occupancy rate that's 90 per cent lower than it was, having the same staff doesn't make sense, it's not even possible to maintain the other jobs, they're reductions that allow you to maintain minimum conditions for others," he argued.

The meeting, which also aimed to seek solutions to curb dismissals in this phase of emergency due to the new coronavirus, was promoted in Luanda by the Ministry of Public Administration, Labour and Social Security in partnership with other ministerial departments.

Ana Pizarro, director of human resources at Sonamer Perfurações and Pride Foramer, who provide services to oil companies, announced that her company should lay off nearly 400 workers after the state of emergency.

"The redundancies are unfortunately an extremely sensitive and painful situation because we have a whole professional aspect, we are losing very well prepared technicians, especially for companies that have been here for many years", she said.

According to her, the firm "unfortunately" is going to request collective redundancies of 380 workers "because we only had two probes, but we lost both, we don't even have the working capital to be able to keep the workers".

But, he noted, "we have guaranteed that nothing will be done before the lifting of the state of emergency and even so, so far, we will continue to pay salaries and everything that the worker is entitled to until the end, no matter what the cost".
