Ombudsman will have the same rights and privileges as the PGR

The draft Law on the Statute of the Ombudsman, approved this Monday in the specialty, determines that the Ombudsman and the Deputy Ombudsman will have the same rights and privileges as the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) and Deputy Attorney General of the Republic.

The law, which will be voted on in general on 20 May, also establishes that the ombudsmen will now have a salary equal to that of the attorneys.

These changes have had the positive opinion of the president of the Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs of the National Assembly, Junior Kings, who advocated equality between the two posts. "We will discuss and find the best solutions to this issue," he said, quoted by Jornal de Angola.

Raul Danda, president of the Commission on Human Rights, Petitions and Complaints of Citizens, explained that currently the salary of the ombudsman is 90 per cent of the salary of the President of the Republic and that that of the deputy ombudsman is 85 per cent, admitting that this issue should be discussed: "I do not know what calculations have been made regarding this, but it is an issue that we should see".

"It was understood that it would be better if instead of making equations, we evolved to direct consignment of each of the benefits," explained the Secretary of State for Justice, Orlando Fernandes.

If this diploma is approved in general, the ombudsman's office will have more autonomy at a financial level, thus being able to perform its duties independently and quickly.
