The President, who traveled to Lisbon as part of the 25th of April celebrations, said that he and the head of the Portuguese government understood it to be “a good opportunity for a first working meeting”.

In this sense, delegations from both countries agreed to hold a meeting of the joint intergovernmental commission soon in Lisbon, “which will, among other things, prepare the visit to Luanda of the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, who has just received the (... ) invitation to do so in the coming months, if possible in July".

Regarding bilateral relations, João Lourenço considered that “they are at their best”. “Although we have an obligation to never feel satisfied. We have to be ambitious to the point of wanting more and more,” he added.

For João Lourenço, “strengthening friendly relations between Angola and Portugal is an ambition that is reciprocal. He’s from Angola but he’s also from Portugal.”

In the statement, without the right to questions, the Angolan President said that the two countries will work not only on bilateral issues, but also seek to align positions “on international political issues, which concern the world and particularly concern Angola and Portugal”, without giving further details.

João Lourenço also stressed that Angola will support Portugal's candidacy for the UN Security Council.

“Obviously, Angola will support this same candidacy”, which is running for a seat for the 2027-2028 biennium.

“So, in short, we must say that our relations are on the right track. The government of the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, will continue what we have done so far and the ideal will be to reinforce it more and more”, he highlighted.

João Lourenço concluded by highlighting that the ambition is for both countries to reach “higher levels”.

The heads of diplomacy from both countries attended the meeting, Paulo Rangel, from Portugal, and Téte António, from Angola.
